Arctic Foxes

JABCECC is currently home to 2 Arctic Foxes: Freddy and Sakari. While these foxes can be tamed, they are not like our domesticated animals, still retaining their wild instincts. This means that they can be aggressive and skittish, and they cannot be fully housetrained.

Freddy Snowballs, an Arctic Fox

Freddy Snowballs

Freddy was our first Arctic Fox rescue at JABCECC. In 2021, he came to us as a surrender from a local family that had purchased him illegally, then realized they were in over their heads. While these animals are beautiful, having one in your home is not all cuteness as it may look like online…

Unlike wild arctic foxes, Freddy’s coat color does not change with the seasons. Despite living in southern California, he sports his white winter coat all year!

Sakari

Sakari (meaning “sweet” in Inuit) is a senior lady who previously lived a horrible life on a fur farm. The fur farmer was willing to surrender her, along with a few other senior arctic foxes, because they were too old to breed, and it was more costly to keep them alive than to sell them as pelts. All of those foxes were surrendered to Mikayla at Save a Fox Rescue in Minnesota; Mikayla then reach out to JABCECC to see if we would be willing to take her in as a possible companion for Freddy.

Sakari

Living her whole life previously on a fur farm means that Sakari will need a lot of time to heal and trust. While in her 30 day quarantine, she and Freddy chatted to each other nonstop, and they have since been introduced to one another. We hope she will be a good friend to Freddy and Freddy will help her heal.

Sakari is a “normal” arctic fox in that, unlike Freddy, she does change colors in the summer. Arctic foxes are brown or grey in the summer, and pure white in the winter, for camouflage.
